Since writing the last post on the reviews for Relic/THQ’s Games Workshop release, “Warhammer 40K: Space Marine”, the reviewer embargo has broken and Metacritic’s average score for professional reviewers is standing at an entirely respectable 73 out of 100 from 4 sites – the community score is a similar 7.6 out of 10.
Joystiq gave the game a score of 80 out of 100 – their reviewer praises Relic’s ability to take their experience from the previous PC “Dawn of War” real-time strategy titles and parlay it into a third-person action title set in the “WH40K” universe.
Official XBox magazine in the UK are a little more cautious – it scores a 70 out of 100 rating – perhaps unsurprisingly as a Microsoft-focussed title, they are quick to bring up the “Gears of Warhammer” reference points and query Relic’s game play choices – a refrain which has come up a couple of times in the reviews that I’ve read. If you’re down for hack-and-slash, buy with confidence – if you want a game which throws in curve balls every few levels, definitely try before you buy.
It’s a little worrying for all concerned, I’m sure, that this game debuts a matter of weeks before the third iteration of the “Gears of War” franchise on Xbox 360 releases what it teased as a full-stop for Marcus Fenix’s story. To say that the games share a similar demographic is to state the completely frakking obvious to a great many of you.
I feel hopeful that this game will do well enough to justify further entries in the series, perhaps covering a little more “40K” lore and territory than this initial salvo is able to – it’s another point entirely to wonder how long the community will stay with this game when Epic and Microsoft’s juggernaut arrives on September 20th…
