Gunn Guiding “Guardians”?

“Guardians of the Galaxy” – the most out-there choice for a Marvel franchise yet?

If there’s one constant in the choices that Marvel has made for their cinematic offerings to date, it’s the bold and unusual choices they’ve made behind the cameras.

Here to make your Marvel movie that bit weirder – James Gunn

Jon Favreau, Louis Leterrier, Kenneth Branagh – to that list of unexpected shot callers now add Marvel Studios’ apparent choice to skipper their “Guardians of the Galaxy” adaptation – James Gunn.  If you’re a fan of the B-movie-and-proud-of-it likes of “Slither” and “Super”, you’ll be both familiar with his work and perhaps also wondering what the jiggins Marvel’s finest saw in those brilliantly demented, defiantly non-mainstream genre pics which assured them that Gunn is the guy to make their next $200 million sci-fi tentpole flick.

An eccentric choice, certainly, but perhaps Gunn’s uniquely bonkers viewpoint is what you need when your main characters include a sentient space plant and a pissed-off, gun-toting racoon.

I don’t know what’s being placed in the coffee over at Marvel Studios, but long may it continue.

Charlie Brooker on “The Avengers”

Critical Hit!

Pictured, Pop Culture pundit Charlie Brooker yesterday…

Professional contrarian, angry man about town and top fellow Charlie Brooker reviews “The Avengers” movie, in an attempt to understand where the kids are at and reaches some conclusions on the very real ordeal which is a modern cinema visit.  Honestly, it’s less like a visit to the movies and more like some absurd combination of obstacle courses, exam, demonic crèche and mobile phone demo unit.

Usual proviso when reading any of Mr Brooker’s rants – he does like his swears and robust imagery.  Forewarned and all that…

Behold: the Marvel Avengers Assemble 3D experience | Charlie Brooker | The Guardian.

Me and Peter B.

Image

I have a love-hate relationship with “Guardian” film critic Peter Bradshaw.  Whilst I respect his opinion on film, I rarely – if ever – find myself agreeing with him.  This is partly because he seems to have a critical blind-spot on the SF/fantasy/horror genre and dramatically gifts anything nominally obscure, in a foreign language or self-consciously arty with more praise than it deserves.  I guess you could say this about any film critic – they should be calling ’em as they see them – but with Peter Bradshaw, I find myself driven to comically absurd flights of apoplexy more often than I would like.

If you had to invent a parody of the kind of film writer who should be working for a newspaper like The Guardian, Peter Bradshaw would be that guy.  Now, if it were Kim Newman talking smack about genre flicks, you know that I’m going to be listening to him…

Hopefully, then, you’ll understand why I’m slightly nonplussed about his just-published review of “The Avengers”. Am I being trolled or did he really like it?  Because I seem to remember him giving a similarly effusive review to the first Fantastic Four movie, which he later recanted, suggesting that his ebullient, pre-holiday mood had significantly sweetened his mood before taking in a superhero movie that even its staunchest defender would admit had some issues (Doctor Doom, Jessica Alba‘s baffling continued employment, a tone best described as sugary and goofy).

In any case, I’ll be able to stop posting these seemingly endless stories about “The Avengers” as Mrs Rolling Eyeballs and yours truly will be seeing the 11:30am screening at our local cineplex on Friday morning.  Yes, I have taken the day off to see this flick (something that I’m not even doing for The Dark Knight Rises) and you already know that I’m a sad excuse for a nerd, so it shouldn’t come as any real surprise.

Some things are – I hope very much – quite worth going the extra mile for.

“Avengers” premiere – early buzz leaking out…

Yep, not enough awesome in that pic.

So, there’s this small superhero flick opening in a few weeks – you may have read the odd post about it on this blog?

“The Avengers”  (or “Avengers Assemble“, if you live in a small and confused island in Northern Europe) had a glitzy premiere in Los Angeles last night and has prompted very positive early reactions from the jammy sods press types who were lucky enough to see it.

My personal highlight of the Tweet-fest,  from noted contrarian and geek critic Devin Faraci of BadAssDigest

“AVENGERS is good enough to make me forgive IRON MAN 2“.

Yoink!  Not that “Iron Man 2” was that bad – that Monte Carlo fight scene kicks all kinds of booty – but it’s probably the biggest misstep in Marvel movies to date.  Another movie in a young series which ends with an extended action sequence which plays like a rejected pitch for a Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots movie is not my idea of moving the franchise forward – I’m guessing that the team dynamic of the Avengers squad may have something to do with Faraci’s reaction.

Joss Whedon, nerd-father rising. Haters to the left, if you please...

Your actual, proper reviews are still embargoed but I don’t see that state of affairs continuing much longer if this early buzz is any indicator…

Superhero Bits & Bobs, for Easter 2012

Hulk crave delicious Empanada yet realises cholesterol is an issue...

The Irish Avenger’s YouTube channel has two new tv spots up for Avengers Assemble – look for the extended Captain America and “Team” spots for more awesome Cap and Hulk action.  He’s also helpfully got the clip of Black Widow escaping capture in a fashion so Whedonesque it brings tears of joy to the eye.

The pic above is new, too – don’t you just love how the CG artists have managed to invest the digital Hulk model with Mark Ruffalo‘s salt-and-pepper hair colouring.  That’s bloody art that is…

Now that The Hunger Games opened and made a few bob – $269 million in the US, at last count – Fox are understandably eager to exploit her rising fame and exercise their option to cast her in the now-greenlit “X-Men: First Class” sequel, per this story on SuperHeroHype.

Matthew Vaughn is directing again, so expect the X-folk to interact with historical events and all the female characters to walk around in lingerie for a good portion of the running time.  Feminism, eh, Matthew – what is it all about?

AMC’s Film Critic blog has an interesting list of the best comic book movie trailers – whilst there are some solid and expected choices listed, I’d like to put my two pence in for the non-DC/Marvel likes of “Scott Pilgrim Vs The World” and the “Hellboy 2” trailer (the former for being amazeballs, the latter for establishing that “Hellboy 2” was a real thing and still chock full of visually arresting Del Torian surrealist gloriousness).

"Joss, are you sure this is my most heroic side?"

The “Captain America” sequel has a release date – April 4, 2014 and follows on from this summer’s “Avengers” movie  in a contemporary time-frame.

Finally, Slashfilm offers a review of Morgan Spurlock’s “Comic-Con Episode Four: A Fan’s Hope” documentary, which was already on my radar due to it being produced by Joss Whedon and now looks like that rare thing – the nerd doc which gets things right.  Imagine that…

“Avengers” Assemble Soundtrack…

Music to be Tony Stark by...

So, you were expecting Selena Gomez, perhaps?

In a move which boldly pitches their soundtrack album firmly at middle-aged rockers, the clever folk at Marvel have decided that this summer’s “Avengers” movie will benefit strongly from a soundtrack composed largely of the musical genre known as ‘Butt Rock’.

Is this really Joss Whedon’s taste in music?  Because, if it is, I’ve just extended my man-crush on him to an absurd degree.

The big news in the soundtrack listing is the first new material from the reunited Soundgarden , “Live to Rise”, which you can hear a brief sample of here.   Riff which might take your face off? Check.  Bass for your face?  Check.  Popular kind of flannel shirt? Check.

Elsewhere on the soundtrack, you’ve got your new (Black Veil Brides), your  grunge and nu-metal survivors (Bush, Papa Roach, Buckcherry), your ‘active rock’ power-players (Shinedown, Theory of a Deadman, Five Finger Death Punch) and your inexplicable (drum and bass godhead Photek remixing Evanescence.  Huh?)

Nu-Metal divas assemble! (Just don't kick me with your cyber-goth boots, Amy)

Mild snark notwithstanding, I am all over this soundtrack like a slavering fanboy who just realised that there’s less than a month to go before he gets to go and see “Avengers Assemble” with Mrs Rolling Eyeballs.  It’s quite possible that this track listing is not your kettle of salmon, but I’m almost predestined on a genetic level to like this stuff – crunchy loudness makes Fluffrick happy!

Excelsior!  Ahem…

Today’s obligatory “Avengers” post – now in Japanese!

Spoilers!  Yep, the new Japanese trailer for the Joss Whedon-directed “Avengers” movie reveals that lovely Gwyns gets face time in the flick and is still doing that concerned face that she does so well (seriously, I just re-watched “Iron Man 2” the other week and you want to give the poor love a couple of paracetamol tablets and listen to her angst, particularly after the Monaco unpleasantness).

Amidst other reveals in the fanboy and geekgirl-baiting trailer are this little baby:

And some more bits and bobs with that unpleasant Loki chap wreaking havoc and trying, in a most unsporting way, to despoil the planet and enslave its inhabitants.  Obviously, a career in conventional politics doesn’t cut it for a trans-dimensional being like him.

Norse gods, man – they’re just impatient.
