Ant Attack!

Wright here, right now…

Permit me, if you will, a prolonged nerdy squee of joy…

Edgar Wright is directing Ant Man and it now has one of those handy release date thingies – November 6, 2015.   It’s a real thing!

As Empire Online‘s story on the matter so accurately observes, this places the film into wave two of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with the adventures of Dr Hank Pym/Scott Lang/Eric O’ Grady opening but a few short months after Joss Whedon‘s eagerly awaited sequel, “Avengers Part Deux: Funk Odyssey” (title not yet confirmed, fact fans).

The chatter must now begin about who’s going to be in it – crosses fingers, wishes for Nick Frost – and how it all fits into the increasingly bonkers and utterly cosmic MarvelVerse.  Broadly realistic action adventure along the lines of “Iron Man” or go-for-broke comic freak-out with mind-blasting special effects aplenty?

The genius behind “Scott Pilgrim“, “Hot Fuzz“, “Shaun of the Dead” and lovely, lovely “Spaced” getting to play with all the toys in the toy cupboard?  As previously stated in the “Pacific Rim” post at the weekend – Take my money! Now!

“Iron Man 3” pic – suit up!

Image

The Avengers did pretty well at the box office this spring.  It’s as popular as Justin Bieber-flavoured dental braces would doubtless be, if some lunatic made them (idea copyrighted and trademarked, people, step away…).

Accordingly, phase two of Marvel’s ongoing “Avengers” project is in motion, with the justifiably emboldened folks at Marvel sharing with us the first proper set picture from “Iron Man 3” – which you can see above.

We’ve already had a few leaks and sneaky shots grabbed from the film’s shoot in North Carolina, which seemed to indicate the presence of Iron Patriot, which might worry those of us who don’t want to see “IM3” conclude with another mano-a-mano battle between dudes in suits.

I mean, I know that the premise of the character implies a certain amount of suit-bound butt-kicking, but it would be nice if splendid film maker and writing icon Shane Black found a smart way to resolve his story without having steel-on-steel fisticuffs saving the day.

We shall doubtless get to see the first teaser trailer for this threequel by the end of 2012, with the film rocking multiplexes and Repulsing box office records down on May 3, 2013…

“Iron Man 3” gets Chinese connection

Image

As movies get bigger and more spectacular, it makes sense to cover some of the financial risk by attracting deep-pocketed investors to share the finances and eventual rewards.

Cue Marvel, whose next Iron Man 3 will be a Chinese co-production.  On the face of it, this makes a lot of sense as China is the very definition of an emerging film market, with a potentially massive audience primed and ready to enjoy the visual kinetics of this superhero sequel and shell out on the acres of spin-off merchandising which usually accompanies such a prominent franchise entry.

Sure, there’s that whole piracy thing to take account of, but the fact that China is allowing more Western films to be distributed and made there would indicate that all concerned realise that there’s a lot of cash on the table and what better than a film featuring the world’s most risk-averse fictional capitalist to be at the vanguard of this cultural expansion?

Just don’t mention Foxconn or anything…

“Avengers” premiere – early buzz leaking out…

Yep, not enough awesome in that pic.

So, there’s this small superhero flick opening in a few weeks – you may have read the odd post about it on this blog?

“The Avengers”  (or “Avengers Assemble“, if you live in a small and confused island in Northern Europe) had a glitzy premiere in Los Angeles last night and has prompted very positive early reactions from the jammy sods press types who were lucky enough to see it.

My personal highlight of the Tweet-fest,  from noted contrarian and geek critic Devin Faraci of BadAssDigest

“AVENGERS is good enough to make me forgive IRON MAN 2“.

Yoink!  Not that “Iron Man 2” was that bad – that Monte Carlo fight scene kicks all kinds of booty – but it’s probably the biggest misstep in Marvel movies to date.  Another movie in a young series which ends with an extended action sequence which plays like a rejected pitch for a Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots movie is not my idea of moving the franchise forward – I’m guessing that the team dynamic of the Avengers squad may have something to do with Faraci’s reaction.

Joss Whedon, nerd-father rising. Haters to the left, if you please...

Your actual, proper reviews are still embargoed but I don’t see that state of affairs continuing much longer if this early buzz is any indicator…
