Tony Iommi updates us…

Over on his official site, Tony Iommi has updated everybody on his progress as he takes the good fight to cancer – he’s finished chemo and has a period of radiotherapy to deal with.  He still plans to play with most of the classic Black Sabbath line-up at this June’s Download festival and reports that work is still ongoing on a new Sabbath record.

So, not out of the woods by a long chalk but still looking positive – you can’t really ask for much more than that, can you?

Tony Iommi diagnosed with lymphoma.

Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath

Well, this news sucks.

Tony Iommi released a statement today confirming that he has been diagnosed with the early stages of lymphoma and is looking at possible treatments with his medical team.

How this affects the touring and recording plans of the newly-reunited Black Sabbath seems like quite the secondary issue but I hope that the early diagnosis means that Tony will be able to get better and get back to rocking our faces off with molten metallic riffs as soon as possible.

My best good vibes are going out to the original Iron Man and one of the founding fathers of Modern Metal.

Here’s Sabbath doing “Paranoid” in 2005 – with Ozzy Osbourne using some regrettably NSFW language – but then, he’s Ozzy, so any entreaty to tone down the Anglo-Saxon vulgarity is rather akin to asking me not to eat toast:  You can ask, but it’s a request doomed to failure.  Much like Cancer’s ill-advised effort to take down Iommi, in fact.

Black Sabbath never say ‘Never again’

The Masters of Reality

Well, that’s one way to trumpet that your pivotal gang of heavy metal pioneers are back in the proverbial saddle.

Black Sabbath announced on Friday that they’ve reformed with the classic line-up – Tony Iommi, Ozzy Osbourne, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward – and will record a new album and tour next year.

Uber-producer Rick Rubin will produce the record, with sessions commencing in January 2012.  The tour kicks off later in 2012 and includes a headline slot on the final night of next year’s “Download” festival.

If you fancy finding out more, there’s a YouTube video of the band’s press conference here.

That Tony Iommi signing in Sheffield…

…will be on Wednesday 19th October 2011, at 5:30pm, in the Orchard Square branch of Waterstones, despite what the Waterstones website states.

Tony Iommi signing ticket acquired - now I just have to buy my book at the signing...

Tickets are free – but there’s no admission without one.  You can call in at the Sheffield Orchard Square branch or call for your ticket on 0114 2728971.

I’ve had a look at the Waterstones site and it appears that Tony’s signing tour isn’t scheduled for any other branches at the moment.  His site isn’t listing the other UK signing sessions as yet, so I would suggest checking back early and often.

In other news, that heavily rumoured Black Sabbath reunion?  Not imminent, at least according to Jack Osborne, who you have to think is somewhat in the loop.  In the manner of these things, we’ll know once the deals are done, the tour’s booked and all concerned want us to buy a ticket.  The law of averages suggests that at least one more go-round for the classic Sabbath line-up is at least a possibility before everybody’s too old and sensible to consider this kind of massive trek.

Tony Iommi – NOT reuniting classic Sabbath line-up, HAS written new autobiography

(Image via Birmingham Culture on Flickr)

Via those industrious chaps at Metal Hammer magazine, we learn that legendary Black Sabbath axe-smith Tony Iommi is NOT planning to reunite the classic Sabbath line-up of Ozzy, Geezer, Bill and himself. At least, not imminently.

Chalk that rumour up to an over-zealous local news hack running wild with a casual Iommi aside and then seeing it become a global news story in moments. No classic Sabbath world tour is forthcoming: Put your credit card down, back away from your ticket provider of choice, nothing to see here.

What Iommi is doing is publishing his autobiography in Europe on 13th October, and in the US on 1st November and his website official website notes that Tony plans a signing tour to coincide with the book’s European publication. No dates yet but I’m putting in my request for Sheffield here – it would coincide nicely with this city’s annual book festival, Off The Shelf.
